Essential staff management skills
Who is this course for?
This course has been designed for architects and administrative support staff who have been (or are about to be) given formal management responsibilities over others. Success in the business of architecture cannot be guaranteed by creative ability alone, it also requires teamwork and the co-ordinated efforts of a diverse group of people, all with slightly different agendas. Management is a simple process but it is rarely easy – because it deals with interactions and relationships between people, and people are complex. Managing creative people demands intelligence, flexibility, resilience and subtlety. Fortunately, helpful management techniques can be learned and the associated skills developed – hence this course.
Course format
This is a full day course for a maximum of 12 delegates. It includes statistical and anecdotal evidence and proven theory and advice, supported by group discussions and activities. Delegate numbers are limited in order to facilitate group discussions and maintain the interactive quality of the training – a group of 10 to 12 delegates is ideal. A comprehensive bound set of course notes will be provided.
Course content
All in-house courses can be tailored to meet the exact requirements of individual practices, suggested topics include:
• The roles and responsibilities of management
• Problem-solving and planning
• Teamwork and group dynamics; understanding the people around you
• Delegation skills
• Briefing techniques
• Basic communication skills for clarity, confidence and impact
• Coping with adversity and failure
• Running effective meetings
• Basic assertiveness skills; dealing rationally with difficult people and situations, and resolving conflict
Cost
The cost of this course is on a sliding scale, depending on the number of delegates:
Up to 9 delegates: £2,000 + VAT per day
10 to 12 delegates: £2,300 + VAT per day
