Colander has developed two generic matrices for architectural practices, to help generate effective job descriptions and inform the annual appraisal system. The purpose of each matrix is to give practices a starting point so that when it comes to developing their own job descriptions or appraisal tools they are not faced with a blank sheet of paper.
Tasks matrix
Our task matrix details all the tasks that need to be undertaken by an architectural practice and allocates them to the different people in the practice, be they a Partner or Director, an Associate, a Project Architect, an Assistant Architect, a Part II Trainee Architect or a member of the support team. The matrix is divided into two sections: project tasks and practice tasks. It is a particularly useful tool to help develop comprehensive job descriptions.
Skills matrix
Our skills matrix identifies the skills and competencies that each person needs to bring to his or her tasks. Similar to the tasks matrix, it allocates a level of skills to each tier of seniority and experience within the practice and is divided into project skills and practice skills. It is useful as a tool to identify the skills levels that individuals need to attain if they are to be promoted, also as a benchmark and discussion point for appraisal reviews, and informing training needs.
Together the matrices can form the basis of a skills and competencies audit for the practice.
The matrices are available in an excel spreadsheet format, so that they can be readily tailored to match the requirements of each individual practice. We are happy to help practices adapt these generic matrices to meet their own needs; equally, we are happy to simply hand over the matrices for practices to tailor on their own.
