In-house course
Winning the Battle of Low Fees:
Part 1 Avoiding the Pitfalls of a Low Fee and
Part 2: Delivering Success on a Low Fee

We are delighted to offer two new courses (which stand alone or work as a pair) under the banner ‘Winning the Battle of Low Fees’.

These courses are run by two astute project managers, Tom Taylor and Martin Long from the much acclaimed, designer-friendly project management firm of Buro Four. They have been designed to help architects do more than simply survive in a world where low fees are the norm.

Each course is for architects who want to bring common sense and leadership to their new business efforts and who recognise that new circumstances require new approaches. They will look at a world where fees of 6% for ‘reasonable architectural services’ no longer exist, and explore how architects might still create fabulous buildings – and make a profit.

Topics addressed in Part 1:
• Client perceptions of a reasonable fee
• What is expected for your fee?
• The characteristics of low fees
• Matching fees to deliverables - changing the way design teams work
• Different customers and different procurement routes
• The difference between fee bids and final accounts - how can this be useful?
• Understanding and using flexible rates and resources
• Sharp practice v professional practice
• Defining and securing profit - financial or other

Topics addressed in Part 2:
• Matching the fee to the service
• Defining the project scope and stages
• Output and product options
• Using the overheads
• Efficiency tricks
• Leading the team
• Following the team
• Financial controls – and extras
• Profits and other benefits

As with all Colander training, these courses are workshop in their style. They draw on Tom and Martin’s personal expertise, as well as proven theory and advice, supported by group discussions, case studies and activities. Numbers are limited to allow a lively, interactive session and make sure that the teaching is relevant to each delegate; all delegates receive a comprehensive set of bound course notes.

Cost
The cost of these courses is on a sliding scale, depending on the number of delegates:
Up to 9 delegates: £1,250 + VAT per half-day course
10 to 12 delegates: £1,500 + VAT per half-day course
13 to 15 delegates: £1,750 + VAT per half-day course
16 delegates: £2,000 + VAT per half-day course

Preparation time needed to tailor the course to your specific needs will be agreed with you in advance and charged at our standard day rates, available on request.

CPD
All our courses address the RIBA CPD requirements for either Project or Practice Management.
